Official and Unofficial Toponyms on Norfolk Island

Norfolk Island (South Pacific), a small external territory of Australia, has placenaming record marked by distinct historical, settlement, and land use periods. This brief communication considers the complex nexus official–unofficial, embedded–unembedded, English–Norfolk language toponyms as way to make better sense localization toponymic knowledge appreciate how such functions within minute society intricately connected its own largely known past an ever changing present. The data were collected during interview fieldwork on period 2007–2009. It concludes putting forward four-category division toponyms: 1) official names adhering common colonial forms; 2) unofficial descriptive names; 3) commemorating local people; 4) esoteric remembering events people. These categories appear distinct, but they are not necessarily mutually exclusive. differentiation processes becoming embedded possible explanation for loss among younger people suggests general ecological disconnect across time involving people, history, associated with toponyms. official–unofficial toponym distinction is applicable other case studies, especially situations competing histories.
